With a short publication in Nature Ecology & Evolution, we highlight the need to develop a Global Biodiversity Observing System (GBiOS) as an interconnected worldwide system of biodiversity observation networks (BONs). This can be seen as an effort comparable to the weather forecasting and climate assessment communities which have developed a global observing system for the collection of climate-relevant observations. In Europe, we are currently designing an EU-wide biodiversity observation network (EuropaBON) as one of the BONs to support the GBiOS suggested by the GEO BON community. Read the paper here.
